You can put multiple archives on a tape by setting TAPEDEV to a non-rewind device. The archive doesn't rewind the tape first. However, the restore does (it reads the archive header first), so you can't restore directly from anything other than the first archive on a tape. Instead, you have first to move the archive to disk or some other media with (say) dd, then restore. A bit of a pain, but it can be a useful technique for consolidating backups in one place.
