Java connecting to IDS (via tomcat server)

Our Java developer has a problem with a Java app that should connect to IDS. Short overview: Java (using Tomcat) runs on a Linux server. In here he has a connection string to connect to the server/port. IDS 7.31 runs on a Solaris server (this is a database server only). We also have 4 application servers connecting to the DB server using CSDK. The Java developer wants to connect directly to the DB server, however I want him to connect via the Apps server to the DB server. Can this be done ? Can he just connect to the port and servername on 1 of the apps servers to get a connection to IDS, or must the connection be straight onto the database server ? Dirk, Can you clarify the question? Connecting directly from a Java app running on Tomcat to a database server is no problem, but from the question it looks like you want to connect to a port and servername on an app server and then forward that connection to the database server? Can you explain more about the app server? what it runs, why you want to do it that way? I don't know anything about Tomcat, but we have a situation where a Java applet running on the web client is only allowed to initiate a net connection to the web server where the applet was fetched from, not to the IDS database server that is running on another machine. I was told that the Java security model doesn't allow direct connections to a third party if the applet is unsigned. We solved this dilemma by running netcat on the Web server, which redirects all connections to the Informix port to the IDS server machine. This is the entry in /etc/inetd.conf: <port#> stream tcp nowait www /usr/bin/netcat netcat -w <host> <port#> HTH, Richard
