Quite correct. If you set your logical log device to /dev/null, then
your logs are automatically marked as backed up, and you cannot back
them up.

Quite correct. You must backup your logs to a valid media device.

RTFM. I think you are confusing the status of your logs. They will not
be shown as free, but should be shown as backed up. Once your logs loop
round again, the logs that are backed up will be reused. If all your
logs really are in use then you are running into a long transaction
situation.
