I want to thank everyone who responded to my question and I want to say
that the TRUNC function given by Rodney (rodney@worf.infonet.net) solved
my problem WITHOUT needing a temporary table and without the use of any
temporary character field. The simplified select that works is something
like:
SELECT xyz
FROM a_table
WHERE ((xyz / 10000000) - TRUNC (xyz / 10000000) * 10000000 = 8765432;
I doing this from memory, but the above select will find records where
integer xyz = 8765432 or 98765432 or 198765432, etc. I'm still testing to
see if it'll break, but so far it seems to work.
Thanks again for the good ideas from everyone who replied!
