FW: ON-BAR
Posted in 2001
Make sure you understand "onbar" before you start testing - when can you do
this, when can you do that - eg. physical and logical restores, how they
work, etc.
There is no easy way out. RTFM.

We use OmniBack with onbar.
Few files that onbar uses and creates are:
ixbar.<instance number>
oncfg.<informixserver name>
These are need for restores.
sysutil database is created by onbar and records inserted.
We have omniback schedule the backup's, but use onbar for the restores.
OmniBack keeps a database of what is on it's tape's, so
to move to a different server to restore requires re-building the OmniBack
database. This can take a few hours for the tape scan to finish.
Backup and restores on same server are faster, but require work on DBA's
part.
This is not a simple tool like ontape.
Learn as much as possible on onbar and the AIX storage manager.
In your case the SA and the DBAs here know more the HP trainers about
the OmniBack software package.

We are currently using ontape, and are planning to convert to ON-BAR.
I am doing to RTFM work right now, but was wondering if there was
anything else that any of you could add to make my experience less
painful.
We were going to use the ISM that comes for AIX, since we are using
the single tape drive. We are looking to install another tape drive
soon.
We are working on our development box, which is very similar to our
production machine IBM F50.
