Hi Alberto! I presume you're using 4GL. I have the "INFORMIX-4GL Reference Version 6.0" (Volumes 1 & 2). On page 4-90 you'll find an explanation of the UPSHIFT(str) command which has the following syntax: UPSHIFT ( Character_Expression ) where sharacter_expression is: > quoted explicit expression -- e.g. "STring to be UPshifted" > function call that returns a string of type CHAR or VARCHAR > named variable of type CHAR or VARCHAR > substring of any of above -- e.g. mystring[1,4] -- 1st 4 characters of variable mystring An example of its use would be: LET u_str = UPSHIFT(mystr) You get the picture. Check you 4GL manuals. I recommend to all my new clients (and old ones) to become very friendly with the Indexes of the 4GL Reference and the Informix Guide to SQL:Syntax. I also recommend strongly that developers read the Informix Guide to SQL:Tutorial. Some pretty basic, but helpful tips and guidelines are contained there. Also, resist any attempts to post questions to the group without first checking the manuals listed above. While the gurus here (of which I am NOT one) would be glad to share their knowledge, they most times do not have time to teach you what would normally be learnt in an introductory training course, or gleaned from an hour's skimming of the above listed manuals. Just some friendly advice. We were all beginners once. BTW, on page 4-47 you'd find UPSHIFT's sister, DOWNSHIFT(). Both are cut from the same code-cloth. So once you get the hang of UPSHIFT(), you could intuitively understand DOWNSHIFT(). Happy coding!
