When we last brought the big O in here for a project the Oracle provided consultants set things up so that the instance would try to restart itself every 1/4 hour in case it had crashed and no one noticed. To be fair to the product, it rarely crashed (though more often than the Informix instance ;-), when it did it was the engine itself, or whatever passes for an engine that the 'start' scripts launch.
