DR: Cannot connect to primary server
Posted in 2007
User configured HDR (High-Availability Data Replication) on IDS 9.40.UC5X3 but couldn't connect primary and secondary servers. The issue was using the wrong server names in onmode commands. Responders identified that the user was using Unix hostnames instead of the Informix instance service names from the first column of INFORMIXSQLHOSTS file. No explicit confirmation of successful resolution is provided in the thread.

Morning everyone,
This HDR is driving me nuts. I'm running IDS version 9.40.UC5X3 on both
servers. Replication worked before we moved the secondary server. Once I got
both my servers up and running and seeing each other, I performed the
following steps. Am I missing something???
1. dbaccess from both servers can login and see DB on other server.
2. Stopped all backups on primary server
3. Ran ontape -s -L 0
4. Put tape on secondary server
5. Ran ontape -p (Answered no to backup logs and level 1)
6. On secondary server I execute: onmode d secondary aimprd01 (Where aimprd01
is the name of my primary server)
When I do this I get the following entries in my online log:
04:18:19 Maximum server connections 0

I think you are using the wrong name in your 'onmode -d primary/secondary
' commands. You are using values from the host name (3rd) column. You
should have the name from the fourth column --> the service, I think.

I think you mean the first column. Which is the instance servername. Not the
UNIX server name.

You need the name of the database engine, not the server. Try this:
onmode -d secondary aimprd01prdtcp

You are using RESTRICT port option (s=6) in your $INFORMIXSQLHOSTS, that is
why you are getting Invalid connection-type error. If you do not intend to
use s=6, removed that and you should be able to connect. Else, you need to
bring up server with DBSERVERALIASES in onconfig. Set your INFORMIXSERVER
to that DBSERVERALIASES name and connect to it. Also, add the machine name
in $INFORMIXDIR/etc/hosts.equiv respectively for the machine you want to
connect to.
Following is the v10 infocenter on RESTRICT setup. You can check yours for

Hi Everett,
That partially worked. The onmode -d primary sci01sectcp command on the
primary now gives me the following:
10:24:18 DR: Primary to Primary
10:24:18 DR: new type = primary, secondary server name = sci01sectcp

Not sure why the first reply is all junk. Anyway, If you are using
RESTRICToption (s=3D6), please make sure you have it setup correctly.
Following is the v10 infocenter on RESTRICT setup. You can check the ma=

for 9.40, I don't think there is a big different on setup

Well that was interesting. I issued the onmode -d secondary aimprd01prdtcp as
suggested on the secondary and got the same error. I then issued the onmode -d
primary sci01sectcp as suggested on the primary and it worked. Ran to a
meeting and when I got back I reissued the onmode -d secondary aimprd01prdtcp
command it is now connected and working. I'm going to have check and see if I
have all my data, but at least I'm connected now.
Thank you all for the help!!!
