Their "base" Enterprise product is WS. ES is exactly the same as WS with a dozen added "network services" packages (It's instructive to take a look at what those packages are and see if you think they justify the extra cost since their support is exactly the same). AS is exactly the same as ES with even more added packages and a hulked up kernel and mandatory support. You can add the Extras and Developer discs to any of the above three "flavors". As for the inexplicable price difference for the "network services" packages between WS and ES (just for the RHN level of support), I would seriously consider just buying WS and downloading the SRPMS for those packages and building and installing them myself. I don't think Red Hat has updated *any* of those particular packages in the last five months. Obviously, Red Hat won't tell you to do that, but I have no problems doing so. -- Forte International, P.O. The Linux marketplace is now a victim of its own success. In our windows-weenie shop there is a great deal of concern that we have supported versions of Linux, no matter that the in-house support seems to solve problems faster than the commercial vendor. Of course this is a case-by-case basis for business rather than the rule, even good Linux admins can't solve all the problems, but I think it's important to have a knowledgable in-house Linux expert available--if your company is of any size--to be there to take care of the system, even if you buy support. RH just confuses me to no end with what they are doing, other than wanting to as you say, tax the stupid. SuSE is similar in their designs on the unsuspecting noob, except I know there's a desktop and a server version, a lot simpler model, brand, etc. My biggest concern is in using a "server" version when a desktop will do the same thing. It's all in the stupidity I guess. Certainly an opportunity out there to ride the momentum and help collect the tax.
