Connecting to Informix DB on another UNIX server
Posted in 2009

Hi,
I am trying to connect to a Informix DB instance on another UNIX server, but
am not sure what are the exact steps to be taken.
I am aware that we can connect to another instance on the same UNIX server and
I am trying to implement the same logic to connect to another instance which
is on another UNIX server using dbaccess.
I tried with exporting the INFORMIXSERVER to point to the other server as:
export INFORMIXSERVER=dbinstance@another.unix.server.com
and then tried doing dbaccess, but it couldn't find the instance.
I assume some changes have to be done in SQLHOSTS file to point to the other
UNIX server..
Can someone please help me with the exact steps. Maybe something with
respective to a developer level access and something with respective to a DBA
level access..
Thanks
Deepak
Hi,
yes, the sqlhosts file is the magic place.
You put a line in there for the IDS instance that you
want to connect to. The hostname (or IP address) will be
the one of the other UNIX system. Also the service
name (or port number). If you put a service name,
then make sure this service name is known on your
local machine (i.e. mapped to a port number, in
the file /etc/services). The protocol entry in this
sqlhosts line must be one for network communication
(not shared memory). Typically one like onsoctcp
or ontlitcp. Then you should be ready to go ...
Other than that reading the manual, Administrator's
Guide in this case, will be quite helpful. :)
Regards, Martin

You have to have an entry in the sqlhosts file copied from the remote
server's sqlhosts file that corresponds to the remote server's
INFORMIXSERVER value. The remote server must have a networked sqlhosts
entry for you to copy (ie not ipcshm), it has to have the same hostname and
service/port in the entry that are in the sqlhosts file on that other server
(you can change the servername - first entry - but then have to use that
name in INFORMIXSERVER), and the service (if you used a service name instead
of a port number) has to be listed in the /etc/services file. See the
Administrator's Reference for details on the sqlhosts file entries.
