RE: Public paper on IDS
Posted in 2008
Not a technical support thread: it concerns access to an IDC white paper on IDS by Carl Olofson. An earlier download problem on IBM's site had been fixed via a support ticket, and copies had been mirrored on community sites (Oninit, informixcity, Ardenta), but IBM asked for them to be taken down — Serge Rielau explains this was an IDC copyright matter, not suppression, since IBM only paid for hosting rights. The rest is opinion: whether such commissioned papers are marketing fluff, objections to the claim that IDS doesn't compete with DB2, and calls for IBM sales staff to be IDS-certified. No further resolution.

I believe it was made available on Paul's Oninit site. But the larger question. Are white papers worth reading or are they more of a marketing blurb?> From: dcruncher4@aim.com> Subject: Re: Public paper on IDS> Date: Mon, 3 Mar 2008 09:47:17 -0800> To: informix-list@iiug.org> > In article <632nq8F24f680U1@mid.individual.net>, Serge Rielau says...> > >Ticket: 34864666 has been opened.> >I'm told it should be resolved shortly.> >> > yes it is working. The fact that putting the paper up there would violate IDC's copyrights could not possibly be the issue. IBM paying the right to place the paper on their website doesn't mean it's a free for all. Interesting, after reading the first sentences of the the book I came to the conclusion that IBM actually wrote it: "IDS neither competes with nor represents an alternative to DB2..." If Mr. Olofson is really believing that, he doesn't understand anything about the database market, especially IDS and DB2. But who knows maybe it is just a typo and he wanted to write: "DB2 neither competes with or represents an alternative to IDS..." That sentence would represent the reality much better as almost everybody having worked with both products will probably agree with. BTW, Carlton's Doe's IDS 11 book is now also available as an eBook: http://www-306.ibm.com/software/data/information/ids-ebook.html Unfortunately also here a registration is needed to download it. Maybe IBM doesn't own the rights on it :-)

I'm just a little bit upset about how Mr. Olofson or/and IBM takes somebody for a fool with statements like "IDS neither competes with nor represents an alternative to DB2..." . This is just nonsense. IDS represents a superior alternative to DB2 (LUW) and I encourage anybody to make their own experiences and test both products instead of believing any IBM (DB2) certified sales specialists or architects. They will tell you what they have always told you because they have no clue about IDS. Dolefully but true and it's high time for IBM to change this weak point asap. As Gumby already recommended several times: IBM get your technical sales specialists and architects certified on IDS, so that they are able to recommend the right product for the specific customer environment and requirements !
> From: neil.truby@ardenta.com > > I expect IBM commissioned it. That is the norm for sucjh papers isn't it? > (that the vendor commissions it). > Not necessarily. Analysts that follow a specific industry write company research papers all the time that are not solicited by the company. It *could* be that the researcher/author asked the question... "IBM, so how do you handle having two different competing databases such as IDS and DB2?" Which would lend the analyst in getting the canned IBM marketing response. Note that I said *could*. The way that the "research" paper was written, you can tell that its a marketing "fluff" piece. It *could* also be that the "researcher" is a hack who wants to solicit business from IBM and doesn't want to bite the hand that feeds him.... _________________________________________________________________ Need to know the score, the latest news, or you need your Hotmail®-get your "fix". http://www.msnmobilefix.com/Default.aspx
