An idle write is one performed by page cleaners off the LRUs when they wake up by themselves, as opposed to when they are woken up by tbinit. Chunk writes are writes performed at checkpoint time. Unless you have LRU_MAX_DIRTY set to 0, you will always get some chunk writes. This is ok, you don't want to constantly flush out the entire buffer pool. The other thing to look at, if your chunk writes are rapidly increasing all the time, is your checkpoint frequency. You may have CKPTINTVL set too low or your physical log may be too small for the activity on your system. Also, consider Idle writes and LRU writes to be equivalent. There is no real advantage of one over the other (indeed, in 6.0 we have eliminated the notion of an idle write, and just count them as Fg, LRU, or Chunk) Dave Disclaimer: These opinions are not those of Informix Software, Inc. ************************************************************************** "I look back with some satisfaction on what an idiot I was when I was 25, but when I do that, I'm assuming I'm no longer an idiot." - Andy Rooney
