Gary D. Hansen@ECCI 09/11/99 01:42 PM Good luck man. We have both Sybase and Informix in our shop. Dealing with Sybase is fast, easy and efficient. Dealing with Informix is usually an exercise in frustration. For example my boss wanted an inventory of the software support contracts and there cost from Informix and Sybase. I had an e-mail from Sybase 5 minutes after I called, listing each product and the support price, everything is done with one customer number. With Informix they can't seem to deal with anything but serial numbers, anyway after 6 weeks of calling and getting nowhere I surrendered. You would think a DB Company would have all your info in a DB. Sybase does. I had some of our support contracts expire. This was our fault because they got buried on someone's desk. I called for support one day they told me my contract expired. Now you would think getting this taken care of would not be to hard. Six weeks before I had support again and lord knows how many calls to Informix. If I order an upgrade from Sybase it is sent next day delivery, Informix seven to ten working days. Both Sybase and Informix make a good product and I have little problems with either (please no flames I'm not bigoted toward either product). Informix is running on a big HP-UX box and Sybase runs on DEC (Compaq) VMS and MS NT, so I have no direct comparison. Informix has things that I wish Sybase did and Sybase has things I wish Informix did. But if I had to pick, Sybase would win based on my experience with trying to deal with Informix, you can't seem to give these people money. The inability of their people to get back in a timely manner, makes me want to join the oracle team. Why can't they just get people to work thru the problems and get it done? I had a lot of trouble communicating my needs, and they are very simple. If it takes this much effort to get $$$ to Infomrix, how they will survive is a live question. Immediately after my rant i did achieve a much higher level of interest, and have in hand the sought after information. Thanks for all who responded, especially Informix, and their excellent service. ghansen@ecc.com wrote: > Gary D. Hansen@ECCI > 09/11/99 01:42 PM > > Good luck man.
