It would make sense to :phase SE out of the picture, but in Australia at least, pricing of OWS is :similar to Online 5 ( or was last time I looked ), whilst SE is pitched :lower. : :How's OWS perform on a single processor Unix PC, with commodity hardware :in it? You might not want to run Online 7 on that machine (performance as :well as cost), and isn't OWS simply a "marketing restriction limited" Online 7? OnLine 7 runs excelently on this type of machine. I am of course in the happy? position of not having had to upgrade from OnLine 5, so my users (or me) haven't seen any performance degradation from such an upgrade. Only the performance enhancement from SE which is quite substantial. From previous posts it seems like you can generally get more or less the same performance from 7 as from 5 but you have to work rather hard on the tuning, and might require some more memory to attain it. However the new features, particularly in 7.22 makes me not want to use ver. 5. Also you can upgrade these machines to 4 processors now and get performance probably on par with a Sun Ultra Enterprice 3000 at half the cost or less. Soon you will also be able to upgrade to 8 or more processors with even better performance. SE is still a very interesting alternative though. OWS is supposed to be the replacement, and will give you a substantial performance increase. However Informix still have quite a way to go to make it as easy to install and particularly to administrate as SE. I am no sure Informix relizes how much they would have to do. It's so much in fact that I would urge them very hard to retain SE for a long time for the low end on Unix and consentrate on such enhancements on NT to have a low administration, easy to use database on that platform. This isn't all that hard, and would immediately render SE not particularly interesting on NT. Whatever the opinion one might have of NT, Informix need a low end engine for that platform and it must be very hight quality in every respect.
