What's client/server product shall I use? There are any number of middleware products you might use. If concurrent updates are important, you need to use a TP-Monitor like TOP END which supports XA-compliant 2-phase commit. If not, you can still use a TP-Monitor like TOP END from NCR at http://www.ncr.com/product/topend/index.htm, but you can consider a simpler product like DCE or ONC RPC. These tools require more coding effort, but if your development requirements are very simple, it is cheaper. If you want GUI administration, message sensitive routing, load balancing, Active/X support, or Java/Internet support, etc., you probably want to step up to a higher end product.
