S6_USE_REMOTE_SERVER_CFG

I'm working with a brand new 11.7 IDS install (server and client updated with
W1 update).
On the server side, if I create the hosts.equiv to allow the client access in
$INFORMIXDIR/etc/hosts.equiv the remove access does not work (Error 956 on the
server-side). If I put the file in /etc I can access IDS from the client.
If I set:
REMOVE_SERVER_CFG hosts.equiv
S6_USE_REMOTE_SERVER_CFG 1
In the onconfig file I can move the hosts.equiv file to $INFORMIXDIR/etc and
the access works.
According to the comments in the onconfig file as well as the documentation
(http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/idshelp/v117/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.ib
m.adref.doc%2Fids_adr_1141.htm), having S6_USE_REMOTE_SERVER_CFG at the
default of 0 will use $INFORMIXDIR/etc/hosts.equiv as the default location for
this file.
Has this change? Is there something I've missed?

I think this has not changed. You're missing some simple info...
REMOTE_SERVER_CFG allows you to specify a file (you choose the name) to
replace /etc/hosts.equiv.
This will be used for regular connections.
S6* means that "use that file for replication connections in ports where
option s=6 is set in $INFORMIXSQLHOSTS
Otherwise these "S6" connections will use $INFORMIXDIR/etc/hosts.equiv

Ok, so S6_USE_REMOTE_SERVER_CFG is not relevant for my purposes since I'm not using any options for my connection. The system default location for the hosts.equiv is in /etc, not $INFORMIXDIR/etc. The REMOTE_SERVER_CFG MUST be defined to hosts.equiv for IDS to use $INFORMIXDIR/etc/hosts.equiv instead of /etc. Is that correct? I was reading the default location in relation to the S6_USE_REMOTE_SERVER_CFG parameter and took the default location to be global rather than just related to that parameter. Thanks!

Yes, and s=6 means "make this connection port accept only replication
connections"

True.

True, but because English is not my main language I'd like to try to
re-write your sentences, because I'm afraid you're assuming some stuff you
shouldn't. If that's not the case, then I aoplogize and please ignore.

/etc/hosts.equiv and ~user/.rhosts are the default locations to specify
trusted relations.
REMOVE_SERVER_CFG and REMOTE_USER _CFG are parameters that allow you to
specify another file (doesn't have to be called hosts.equiv or rhosts)
where you will settle the trusted relations.
This was a 20 years+ dream come true in the sense that it was a long
awaited feature. One of those that users were missing and that I in my
ignorance would assume was pretty easy to implement (surely it was a bit
more complex than what it may appear).
So, my point is that you can use whatever name in REMOTE_SERVER_CFG. Not
necessarily hosts.equiv. In fact you may have different files for different
instances that share the same $INFORMIXDIR
