onstat from app server?

For most of our systems we currently run Informix 11.50FC4 on the=
same RHEL5 server as the application that it supports. We are working
on a= new configuration where we have an application server and a
database serve= r, as I'm sure most of you normally do. Historically
with the databas= e on the same server it enabled our application
developers to utilize some = of the Informix binaries such as onstat
and oncheck inside various parts of= their scripts. For the split we
are using the CSDK for connectivity = without any issue. Of course
the scripts are throwing up errors witho= ut access to those
commands. Our big problem is that we need, unfortu= nately, to not
force any application changes at this point to get this conf= ig
approved by the powers that be. The programmer's suggestions are t=
he following:
install all of informix on the app server instead of t= he CSDK
install most/all of the application on the database server so th= e
scripts can have direct db access.
I'm sure you'll understand why = we are balking at this, but we aren't
sure if there is a better solution?
Thanks,
Joe

Even if you install onstat etc on the app server, you will still not be able
to run those utilities to see the condition of the IDS server running on the
database server machine. Those utilities (for the most part, not all),
especially onstat, peak into the server's shared memory which they cannot do
if they are running on another machine like the app server. Several
solutions:
1. Run the onstat and other utility commands from the scripts on the app
servers using rsh/ssh remotely to the server. This is a trivial change to
the scripts running on the app server.
2. Create a small utility (or two three) written in ESQL/C that gets the
information you are parsing out of the onstat output from the sysmaster
database and modify the scripts to use the output from that utility.
