Hey L. S.
what are you talking about, just using dd on a chunk by chunk basis ?
Thanks.

Hello Floyd,
Since you are happy with ontape, use it. I just wanted to add that a
cold transfer is also possible. That is what we use for our 1.5 Tb
database.

Hello Floyd, Yes, but haven't tried dd. I have cooked files so I use a form of "cp" on a chunk by chunk basis. That gives me 1 read and 1 write. I even wrote a script to do them all in parallel. Let me add another strange thing I do (that works!). Every week I backup my 1.5 Tb production database using "compress -c" from source to target for all chunks in parallel. It is fast, small (about 0.2 Tb), and easily accessible for restore. And all of my restores worked (using "uncompress -c" in parallel). But I can only vouch for this kind of I/ O and CPU on AIX. -L.S.
