You have to do something like:
ontape -s -L 0 <<!EOF
n
!EOF
But keep in mind that this will fail if a tape change is needed.
Or you can get my submission to the IIUG Software Repository,
utils3_ak, which includes and event alarm program that executes ontape
as a child process with a bi-directional pipe for logical log backup
and reads and replies to the questions that it asks. You could use
that as a template for writing a program to run ontape in general. It
could determine that a tape change is being requested and trigger an
operator's beeper or print a banner on the console or....
