Translating with DrWatson… this can take a few seconds the first time.
This is a genuine, complex translation. DrWatson protects commands, error codes, and log output while naturally translating the surrounding text. It’s translated once and saved.
Not a problem report but an opinion poll: Mark Scranton asked who still uses onperf, especially its xtree query-visualisation component, and whether it should be enhanced. Replies were broadly positive about xtree (used for watching long DSS queries), while several felt the rest of onperf was limited compared with tools like DBSonar or Server Studio, or suggested onstat -g pqs plus SET EXPLAIN as a character-mode alternative. Wish-list items included showing table names/tabid in the query tree and monitoring more chunks; one poster recalled that an internal separation between engine layers makes table names hard to surface. X-Windows availability was noted as a practical obstacle. No technical issue was resolved.

I'm just curious.....any "onperf" fans? I am onsite using it for query
analysis (the xtree part that is), and would hope we don't ever get rid
of it (although I know it has been discussed many times), and would
wonder if it should be enhanced.
Any thoughts?
Mark Scranton
We use it on occasion, for just what you are doing (esp. long-running
DSS-type jobs).
I second the call to keep, and perhaps enhance.
Years back, the X-win interface was problematic, but with the ability to
put up a cheap Linux workstation, I would even rescind my call to port
to some other type of interface (Web w/ Java plug-in?).
Enhancements? Allow me to specify items in the Activity Tools area to
monitor. E.g.: I have so many chunks that only 32 show up.

I never use onperf but xtree is packaged separately (xtree) and I use
it all the time.
Version 10 does have onstat -g pqs that has the same information in a
character format.
Also use set explain statistics with onstat -g pqs.
Xtree stand alone is much quicker than running it from onperf and the
overhead is less.
Remove onperf from the install, but leave xtree!
FYI

Big fan of xtree. I find the rest of onperf unneccessarily limited.
CobraSonic's DBSonar and AGS's full version of Server Studio do a better job
of displaying/monitoring resources.
On a separate note, good to be hearing from again you Mark.

yes, I use xtree all the time. I find it very valuable. I've also used
the monitor to watch cpu utilization during load testing, disk i/o, isam
calls, etc..
Enchancement would be great. Specifically, tabinfo (tabid maybe) in the
query tree display.
Thanks

I have used xtree a lot. I remember talking to Marco Greco of IBM UK
and
he said "does it still ship I though we dropped it years ago!".
Yes it does and it would be nice if xtree could display table names but
apparently
(an my memory is crap here) Marco said something like the layer that
xtree displays
and the table names layer in the engine are deliberately seperated and
there is
a kind of deliberate "wall" between the 2 layers. Pity since xtree is
good for
watch queries execute!
the
sql layer and the table layer in the engine have a
