IDS-9.4 FC6
Posted in 2008
A site running IDS 9.4 saw repeated "listener-thread: err = -25587 ... Network receive failed" messages in onstat -m after tweaking SHMVIRTSIZE, SHMADD and NETTYPE. Reverting the NETTYPE change didn't help. Respondents explained -25587 is generic: usually clients dropping connections without closing, something speaking a non-Informix protocol to the port (port scanner, monitoring/cron script, web server health check), network issues, or too few configured connections; advice included fewer connections per poll/listener thread (max ~200 each), more threads, checking onstat -g ntd, and snooping the port to find the offending IP. No confirmed fix or outcome is recorded in the thread.

HI to All,
Since yesterday we have make the following changes in our onconfig file
Parameter
Before
After
SHMVIRTSIZE
5000000
6000000
SHMADD
500000
1000000
NETTYPE
ipcshm,7,700,CPU
ipcshm,7,700,CPU
NETTYPE
soctcp,5,400,NET
soctcp,2,400,NET
And we get from onstat -m the following message
listener-thread: err = -25587: oserr = 0: errstr = : Network receive failed.
listener-thread: err = -25587: oserr = 0: errstr = : Network receive failed.

Note that IBM recommends not more than 200 connections per poll/listener
thread. You have configured for 700 connections for each poll thread for
shared memory and 400 for each TCP poll thread. Increase the number of
listeners and reduce the number of connections each monitors instead.
This likely has nothing to do with the -25587 errors. They are most
commonly caused by client applications exiting without shutting down their
network connections (very common among poorly written PC apps). Another
possibility is that if this is amember of an HDR pair you are experiencing
intermittent network outages between the servers in the pair.

Hi, is this a newly installed/configured system? A possible reason for this may be that connectivity to IDS is not configured correctly. Check the sqlhosts file, supported protocols, etc. Otherwise this could be from some unspecified connect attempt to the IDS's listener thread. E.g. someone using "telnet" to 'connect' to IDS's service/port. Since "telnet" (or whatever it may be) does not speak the proper protocol to connect to IDS, you would see some error like this. (It could also be some port scanning software doing such things ...) Hi From your earlier post you suggested that this error started to occur after you changed some onconfig parameters. If this is the case I would suggest that you change the NETTYPE setting of soctcp,2,400,NET back to soctcp,5,400,NET and see if the problem still occurs. Hi, in these circumstances I think the system is running out of some resource. Check the NETTYPE setting again. 5 * 400 = 2000, I think, rather than 2500. Maybe it also is a better idea to set the limit a bit lower for each thread and instead have more threads. What about a setting of 10 * 250 (would equal nearer to 2500, I think)? What is this about the protocol being soctcp, using telnet and/but shared memory? Something's incongruent here. You use telnet to login to a machine on UNIX OS level for a UNIX command prompt. This is not connecting to IDS. Once you have done the above, you may be able to connect to IDS locally (as you are already logged in on the local UNIX machine on OS level). For that you can use shared memory connection to IDS (instead of network connection via TCP/IP). Or you connect from a remote machine via network TCP/IP directly to IDS - without doing a telnet first. This type of connection does not use shared memory (after all you are normally not to access shared memory from a remote machine). If you have " NETTYPE soctcp,5,400,NET ", then this is a configuration for connections via network (TCP/IP) to IDS, not via shared memory. The dumb thing about the error message that you receive is that you do not know from which protocol (i.e. from which listener thread) it stems. [ I've admonished this before. ] Therefore, if you have different listener threads running for different protocols, you may have to do a bit of trial- and-(no)-error reconfigurations to test each type of connection by its own. Then you will be able to see which connection type has the problem. I think once you know this, you will be able to resolve the problem with all the other hints received meanwhile. :) Xairetisma, :) Martin -- Martin Fuerderer IBM Informix Development Munich, Germany Information Management IBM Deutschland Research & Development GmbH Chairman of the Supervisory Board: Martin Jetter Board of Management: Erich Baier Corporate Seat: Boeblingen, Germany Reg.-Gericht: Amtsgericht Stuttgart, HRB 243294 "Achilleas Achilleos" <AchilleasAchilleos@semltd.com.cy> Sent by: ids-bounces@iiug.org 01.12.2008 11:44 Please respond to ids@iiug.org To ids@iiug.org cc Subject RE: IDS-9.4 FC6 [14163] Hi This is NOT a newly installed/configure system Also this message "listener-thread: err = -25587: oserr = 0: errstr = : Network receive failed." Every 5 seconds... Search the list, this one comes up about monthly. You have a port check cron script or something similar that's pinging the IDS port but it's not compatible with informix so the error. Hi , had something similar but only every 10 minutes. If on a unix/solaris system , try "snoop -t a port xxxxx" (where xxxxx is the port number used for your instance) you may at least be able to determine the ip-address trying to ping. Hi
Error -25587 is a generic error that appears whenever a connection fails and
so has many possible causes. You can check the output of onstat -g ntd for
rejected packets. It is sometimes accompanied by other errors so look for
any other errors in the online log that might give more clues as to the
cause.
Poll threads are responsible for accepting all incoming connection requests
to a database server. If the request is for a new connection, the request is
handled by the listener thread. There is one listener thread for every
dbservername/dbserveralias. It may also be worth adding another listener
thread and spreading the load over the threads.
The above listener-thread error can also be seen when something is changed
on the operating system side, or a network problem, possibly a problem with
the router, like an ip address has been changed or possibly a port number.
However in most cases 25587 points to two possible errors: network error or
insufficient connections configured through the NETTYPE setting. So as the
first step you should monitor the network for errors and further increase
the number of connections though the NETTYPE parameter.
