Re-Linking is not necessary to set these parameters! If you don't have a file /etc/sysctl.conf, just create one with the kernel parameters you need. Do a "man sysctl.conf" for the syntax. If you google for "sysctl.conf suse 8.2" you will also find a number of useful links. The method you posted with the boot.local file and cd'ing to /proc/sys/kernel may work, but is a bit kludgy. The /etc/sysctl.conf method is the documented and supported way to achieve this. I am also not a very experienced Linux sysadmin, but Google and Usenet have always been my friends!
