Tbunload on Unix System

Informix Engine: 5.02 Unix System: UNIX RS6000 AIX 3.2 Tape drive device: /dev/rmt2 Why do we have to provide pointer variables to the tape drive to unload table from tape? We used tbunload to unload the many tables on this tape. Why doesn't tbload have enough knowledge concerning the tape to point directly to that table and then unload it?
