Serial Number within a group

Does anybody have any idea how to generate serial number that stays within a group? Example Table A ------- Col1 Col2 ---- ---- 1 1 1 2 2 1 2 2 2 3 3 1 etc Col1 is the group while Col2 is suppose to be serial within its own group. I am aware that Informix does support serial number but it is table wide. Any contributions?
