SYSTEM command size limit in SPL

Is there a limit on the string of SYSTEM call inside SPL? One of my SPL do the following, when there is an insertion occur, my trigger procedure execute another procedure which use the SYSTEM command and echo a line to a data file. This line includes additional information from other tables. The only thing I found out is the SPL won't compile. I know the line being generated is very long, about 2-3 K in size. So, I try to take some of the fields out, and down to a certain point, the SPL works.
