Hi Rudy, I'm just looking at my old e-mails. I'm getting complaints that
our system is slow.
In your e-mail below you use the formula -
(usercpu + syscpu) / (seconds * numcpus)
OR ACTUALLY
b / (a * numcpus)
Is numcpus the physical number of cpus or the number of virtual cpus ?
Regards
Dirk

If you have a version of top , run it at peak period and monitor the cpu
utilization of your cpu vps (oninit processes). If ALL are close to 100%
(say, about 90%), you need to add cpu vps. If you already have cpuvps =
number of physical cpus, you've reached your hardware limit.
Alternatively, during your peak period, do the following.
1. Initialize stats (onstat -z)
2. Wait about x seconds. (x should be about 10)
3. Run onstat -p.
4. From the onstat -p and the onstat -z results, determine (a) the time
difference between Stats initialization and running of the onstat -p
command. (b) the amount of cpu seconds used by Informix (usercpu +
syscpu).
5. Compare the two, factoring in the number of cpus - i.e b/(a*numcpus)
6. If the result is close to 1 (say, above 0.9), you need to add cpu
vps. If you've run out of cpus, you've reached your hardware limit.
