It can be done - BUT VERY CAREFULLY !!!
I don't think that setting the LTAPEDEV to /dev/null will help
you (well, I could be wrong if I didn't understand the question).
You have to now the rootdbs reserved pages structure - look at them
in Informix Administrator Guide.
You could approach this issue in two ways:
1. By editing the PAGE_1CKPT & PAGE_2CKPT and then by modifiying
the log pages (this is not a very easy way)
2. By creating another Informix instance with the same number (and size)
of logical logs as in your old instance and then:
a. Copying the PAGE1_CKPT and PAGE_2CKPT from your new
instance into your old instance chunk.
b. Copying the CURRENT log (well, you could copy just the
pages used in this log) from your new instance to your
old instance chunk. The number and the position of your
current log you can find using "oncheck -pr" command.
