INFORMIX LEVEL 0 BACKUP
Posted in 2007
Topics: Backup & Restore
Dear All I am a new user of informix v9.4. Can someone help me with the following. We have added some new tables to our database, is it necessary to perform a level 0 backup? Can we perform the level 0 backup while the system is up and receiving the transactions. ( I was asked to bring down the application and bring down the database and bring the database up only, without bringing up the application and perform the level 0 backup) regards
Yes, Informix supports a hot backup. You can run it while other users are
on the system. Check out ontape and onbar.
You don't HAVE to run a backup after creating tables, but backups are
generally a good idea.

Hi Syed,
Informix performs on-line backups.
What this means is that you can take a backup while the instance is performing
it's normal operations.
Are you planning on using onbar or ontape?

No, the tables are available immediately -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of SYED ALI Sent: Monday, May 14, 2007 12:57 PM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: INFORMIX LEVEL 0 BACKUP [9145] Dear All I am a new user of informix v9.4. If your onconfig file parameter LTAPEDEV points to something else than
/dev/null
you can apply logical logs in case of a restore (restore level 0 backup and
apply
logical log restore afterwards). In that case a level 0 backup and the logical
logs
are sufficient.
To take the level 0 backup you MUST use one of the informix utilities ontape
or onbar and these are always 'hot backups'.
