Cursor position on line

I am writing a maintenance program that allows the user to fill in a blank screen with text and codes for data fields. The text is no problem. I am using an input array (but will change if need to) to accept the text. My plan, when the user presses control-something, I will update my internal tables with values based upon the current position of the cursor. But how can I tell what column the user is in??
