ids from 11.50 to 11.70
Posted in 2016
Hugo asked whether he could move an instance from IDS 11.50 to 11.70 simply by shutting down 11.50, pointing the environment variables at the 11.70 install, and starting it. The list confirmed that is the normal method, adding: take a backup first, copy/match onconfig and sqlhosts, finish any pending in-place alters (needed if you want to revert), and update statistics afterwards. His first attempt failed because he used oninit -i (initialize) and hit an assert that rootdbs lacked the ~500MB free space needed for conversion. Adding a 500MB chunk to rootdbs (and starting normally, not with -i) completed the upgrade. Follow-ups pointed to IBM migration docs, Conversion Guard/restore points, and testing on a clone; for storage snapshots, use onmode -c block/unblock.

Hi everybody In a develop server I have two installations of ids: 11.70 and 11.50 Now, the instance is running in 11.50 ¿ can I upgrade to 11.70 just shutting down the 11.50 instance, adjust the environment variables and starting the 11.70 ? ¿ do I need to do something else ? Again, thank you very much for your help
Yes, and update the stats Cheers Paul -----Original Message----- From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of HUGO PADILLA Sent: Friday, December 23, 2016 10:53 AM To: ids@iiug.org Subject: ids from 11.50 to 11.70 [38365] Hi everybody In a develop server I have two installations of ids: 11.70 and 11.50 Now, the instance is running in 11.50 ¿ can I upgrade to 11.70 just shutting down the 11.50 instance, adjust the environment variables and starting the 11.70 ? ¿ do I need to do something else ? Since the upgrade does make structural changes in your database, be sure to run a backup first. Other than that, what you're proposing is the recommended upgrade method. Make sure your onconfig and sqlhosts files in the 11.70 installation have been updated to match the 11.50 ones. --EEM > -----Original Message----- > From: ids-bounces@iiug.org [mailto:ids-bounces@iiug.org] On Behalf Of > HUGO PADILLA > Sent: Friday, December 23, 2016 10:53 AM > To: ids@iiug.org > Subject: ids from 11.50 to 11.70 [38365] > > Hi everybody > > In a develop server I have two installations of ids: 11.70 and 11.50 > > Now, the instance is running in 11.50 > > ¿ can I upgrade to 11.70 just shutting down the 11.50 instance, adjust > the environment variables and starting the 11.70 ? > > ¿ do I need to do something else ? > > Again, thank you very much for your help > > > *********************************************************************** > ******** > Forum Note: Use "Reply" to post a response in the discussion forum.
Hugo: This will work fine, take the other's suggestions as well. To what's already been said I will add that if there are any incomplete in-place alters on tables in the server, they should be completed before you upgrade. They will not prevent the upgrade but if you should have to/want to revert to 11.50 you won't be able to without completing them first, so might as well get them out-of-the way now. Art Art S. Hi again
I shutted down my 11.50 nstance and try to oninit -i the 11.70, with the new
environment variables, but i had the next error:

Don't oninit -i it unless you want to trash what is there, just oninit -vw
and it will (should start) with new binaries
If you really want to trash what is there then start with the shipped
onconfig.std and edit as required
Cheers
Paul

Hi again The epiphany came, only I had to add a 500Mb chunk to roodbs The base is now in 11.70 :) Thank you very much for your kind help
I see you got this done but for future reference there are IBM docs on this
subject to help you, e.g.:
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSGU8G_11.70.0/com.ibm.mig.doc/ids_m
ig_015.htm
http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSGU8G_11.70.0/com.ibm.mig.doc/ids_mi
g_274.htm
More from Developer Works:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/data/library/techarticle/dm-1011upgradeinformi
x/index.html
I'd also recommend using Conversion Guard and a restore point:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21419611
Even better, practise the migration on a cloned instance (created using
ontape/onbar/ifxclone or a storage snapshot).
Ben.
Thank you very much for the additional info, will be very usefull to me. Only a doubt: in the the clone snapshoot the actual database can be running, and will be no blocking in the process of clonning ?
Correct. If you are using an external storage snapshot you should block and unblock the
instance using:
onmode -c block<do external snapshot>
onmode -c unblock
Alternatively you can use the equivalent commands from the SQL API.
IBM doc here: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21173700
Your external snapshot should take under 1 second; if it isn't very quick this
method may not be suitable and you should use ontape, onbar or ifxclone
instead. The process of blocking and unblocking should take no longer than a
second or two even on a busy system.
Ben.
