Like Jonathan said, errno's differ from OS to OS, and errnos over 32 are more
variable than smaller ones which mostly were inherited unchanged from BSD 1.0.
Here's a quick survey for 72 on the OSes I use:
HP: Error number: 72 Message: Value too large to be stored in data type
IBM: Error number: 72 Message: Software caused connection abort
Sun: Error number: 72 Message: Locked lock was unmapped
Linux: Error number: 72 Message: Multihop attempted
The HP version sounds like what you ran into.
