Online Development & Runtimme versions

I'm doing development on the same machine that users are running the programs. Will I need to install BOTH of the Online instances, and if so, how should they be configured? Different $INFORMIXDIRs, etc...? I'm open to suggestions. I've not let my users at this machine yet.
