HDR Cannot connect
Posted in 2017
Benji couldn't start HDR between two RHEL 7 servers and posted his onconfig/sqlhosts/hosts.equiv/services setup, asking what was wrong. Suggestions: ping both ways by IP and hostname, telnet to the Informix port (expect error -408 in the online log), open the port in the Linux firewall, and test connectivity in both directions with dbaccess, checking the remote server's message log for authentication failures. He found local connections worked but remote ones failed (error 908) and suspected the uppercase letter in his DBSERVERALIASES name was illegal. The thread ends with advice to first verify the alias works locally; no confirmed resolution is recorded.

I have one little problem here with trying to get my HDR to start up. I know
it is something that I have misunderstood along the way in my reading. Can
someone take a quick look at this?
Primary:
hosts file in /etc has the ip of Linux server name of Primary and Linux server
name of Secondary.
hosts.equiv in /etc has newserverS_hdr which is in my onconfig under
DBSERVERALIASES
onconfig has DBSERVERNAME newserver
DBSERVERALIASES newserver_hdr
sqlhosts file
newserver onipschm linux primary server name newserver
newserver_hdr onsoctcp linux primary server name newserver_hdr s=1
newserverS_hdr onsoctcp linux secondary server name newserverS_hdr s=1
Secondary: host file same as primary above
host.eqiv newserver_hdr
onconfig DBSERVERNAME newserverS
DBSERVERALIASES newserver_hdr
sqlhosts file
newsererS onipschm linux secondary server name newserverS
newserverS_hdr onsoctcp linux secondary server name newserverS_hdr s=1
newserver_hdr onsoctcp linux primary server name newserver_hdr s=1
I have tried a number of things to tee it up, but I assume I have something
wrong here.
From the primary, I thought I run this command
onmode -d secondary newserver_hdr
in the secondary, I have a typo. DBSERVERALIASES is supposed to be newserverS_hdr
I wanted to add that I didn't solve this. My original post had a typo in it and I can't see how to edit a post on here.
Which version of Linux are you using? A) First try and ping between the two machines in both directions, first ping with ipaddress then ping with hostname: ping 192.16.1.23 ping myhost B) download then telnet program E.g for CentOS As root yum whatprovides telnet # returns telnet-0.17-60.el7.x86_64 yum install telnet-0.17-60.el7.x86_64 C0 See if telnet can connect to the host and port between machines telnet myhost myport and see if the connection is allowed. One thing you may need to do is to open a port on the linux firewall to allow connections E.g. for CentOS something like sudo firewall-cmd --zone=public --add-port=1433/tcp --permanent sudo firewall-cmd --reload Regards, David. > On 26 April 2017 at 12:47 BENJI LONG <ruggedmouse@hotmail.com> wrote: > > > I wanted to add that I didn't solve this. Hi, do I have everything configured correctly up to this point? It is Red Hat Enterprise release 7.1 Maipo Ping works both ways. Not like I was expecting like I see in Windows though. I ping the ip and it keeps doing its thing until I hit control C, and then it tells me no packets lost. Telnet fails. I forgot to post what I have in /etc/services. Do I need the linux server name or do I need what is in my sqlhosts file for tcp? On both servers, I have what I put in my sqlhosts file under onisoctcp I have in /etc/services newserver_hdr 1112/tcp newserverS_hdr 1113/tcp
Try telnet <ip> <informix port> <return><return> If you see don't see error -408 in the informix log you don't have comms configured like you think you have Cheers Paul > Hi, do I have everything configured correctly up to this point? > > It is Red Hat Enterprise release 7.1 Maipo > > Ping works both ways. Hi, when you say informix port, is that the port I put into the /etc/services file? So in my case it would be 1113?
Dear Benji: I usually test my connection between the HDR pair beforehand by initiating a DBACCESS session from one server to the other and visa versa. This will let you know if one instance can see the other, can connect to it, and if you are authenticating. Good luck. Best regards, Martin M. Graney Queues Enforth Development, Inc. I tried that. I ran the command dbacces and then in the menu, I chose "connect" but nothing displays. I take it that if I did that correctly, then I have issues with how this is all setup, but I can't figure it out...ugh
ok, I hit "connection" and then connect, and my other instance shows up! So what is that telling me?
I put in my user and password and it said running...
and then ended with:
908 Attempt to connect to database server newserverS failed.
ISAM error: record is locked
I tried to login with the user I log into the server with. After that I sudo
su - informix to get to the informix user, so I'm not sure what I am supposed
to connect with through dbaccess
If I connect to the instance on the local machine, I can connect. If I try and connect to the instance on the remote machine, it fails...darn.
Dear Benji: I would look in the remote systems IDS message log and see if there is an authentication failure. If so you may need to make changes to the security on the instance you are connecting to (i.e. hosts.equiv file, ...) Best regards, Martin M. Graney Queues Enforth Development, Inc. I think my post became convoluted and nobody knows what the other is asking now...ugh.
I think I found one issue. From the literature: DBSERVERALIASES must not include uppercase characters So that means my newserverS is no good. I thought that is what Lester used in his webcast, but I must be mistaken.
Dear Benji: If you are using server alias make sure you can connect to the instance with the alias on the sever that you've created the alias for first. If that works then try connecting from the remote server with the alias. Best regards, Martin M. Graney Queues Enforth Development, Inc. Hi, do you mean connect to the instance through dbaccess?
Dear Benji:
Yes connect to the local instance through DBACCESS but use the alias you
created to make sure that it is functioning locally.
Best regards,
