still more chunk questions
Posted in 1994
Sigh, this is more challenge than I really need. First, many thanks to Tom Hogarty, Jack Parker, and Dale Gilbert for their help. Tom quoted some of the 5.0 Admin. Guide to me, which helped a lot, since I am trying to set up a 5.0 OnLine system, but only have 4.0 and 4.1 manuals available to me. (See what I mean about a challenge!) Okay, I've found the chunks parameter in tbmonitor and the tbconfig file. My 8 chunk "limit" is merely the default setting in tbconfig.std. Now more questions: 1. Chunks appears to be a dynamic parameter in tbmonitor. Can it really be changed on the fly, since it seems to change the amount of shared memory needed? Should the engine be quiescent or off-line when this parameter is changed? 2. When I switch to mirroring, must I manually recover the mirror chunk? The manual I have seems to contradict itself: in one place it says the mirror chunk will be automatically recovered, in another it says that I *can instruct* the engine to recover the chunk. Which is right? Now to answer a question asked by one person who helped me: Yes, you can create the catalog for a database in the rootdbs. In fact this seems to be the default if you use either ISQL or DBACCESS menus to create the database. If you use query language, you must add the "IN <dbspace>" clause of CREATE DATABASE to place the catalog in other than the rootdbs.
