INFORMIX HEADLINE NEWS FLASH 9/16/96 Informix in the News INFORMATIONWEEK "More support for Universal Server" Tandem and Eastman Kodak have joined the growing list of companies that plan to support Informix's Universal Server. Tandem will support DataBlades in the next release of its NonStop SQL database, scheduled for release in about a year. Kodak is developing a digital image DataBlade based on FlashPix, a file format for storing and editing photographs and related data. The DataBlade, due in December when Universal Server ships, will make it possible to retrieve digital images in low or high resolution. Evan Bauer, from Giga Information Services, says, "[Informix is] setting itself up to be the primary competitor" to Oracle in the emerging market for object relational databases. Next week, Informix will announce MetaCube 3.0, an upgrade to its OLAP engine that works with OnLine Dynamic Server. (9/16/96, pg. 24, John Foley) SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS "Tandem, Informix form partnership" Tandem and Informix have formed a partnership that will integrate Informix's DataBlade software application with Tandem's parallel database software, allowing business users to improve their time series analysis, spatial map rendering, multimedia and electronic publishing uses. (9/10/96, pg. 2E, staff writer) PC WEEK "DataBlade sharpens ServerWare SQL" Tandem will integrate Informix's DataBlade API with Tandem's ServerWare SQL massively parallel database. The DataBlade technology will allow the Tandem product to handle non-relational data such as audio, video and pictures. Separately, Informix announced last week that Kodak will create a new, Web-enabled image DataBlade Module for the Universal Server. (9/16/96, pg. 34, Juan Perez) INFOWORLD "Pipeline" Tandem last week licensed Informix's DataBlade application programming interface for use in its new ServerWare SQL database software. The software will run on Tandem's Himalaya and Windows NT servers and will ship next fall. Tandem will also license and resell Informix's Universal Server database applications on its servers. (9/16/96, pg. 45, staff writer) INFOWORLD "Data warehousing on NT picks up speed" At the DCI data warehousing show this week, Microsoft will launch a data warehouse initiative that includes enhancements to SQL Server 7 and a series of metadata standards endorsed by major vendors, including Baan, Platinum, Praxis and SAP. Informix will introduce a new version of its MetaCube OLAP engine. MetaCube 3.0 will be more integrated with Informix's OnLine Dynamic Server than previous versions. (9/16/96, pg. 6, Mark Leon and Martin LaMonica) PC WEEK "Informix, Oracle lead warehousing rollout" At this week's DCI Data Warehousing show in Phoenix Informix will announce that the new version of its relational OLAP server will ship by year's end. MetaCube 3.0 lets users embed custom OLAP applications, or snap-ins, in its engine. The product ships with 16 snap-ins and with a kit to let users develop their own snap-ins. (9/16/96, pg. 10, Juan Perez) c/net "Data tool serves up answers" Informix will introduce a new data warehousing tool that can help users get quick answers to common business questions. MetaCube 3.0 is the first release of the company's OLAP server tuned to the Informix database since the product was obtained through the acquisition of Stanford Technology Group last fall. Beginning next year, the company plans to integrate function-specific servers, such as MetaCube, into the database to give users a single database for performing both data retrieval and analysis.
