Re: IBM AIX Kernel parameter limitations

Mikey, your nuts! Anyway, I'm not the system administrator, I'm the DBA. The System Administrators get to make the hardware decision and don't really care about my input, but since I had heard compliants from other users I just wanted to see if this was going to be a potential issue. Just information gathering, not witch hunting. (Halloween was last month). Since I support both AIX and HP, I think that what you are trying to do is a witch hunt. First, lets get real. In the last 10 years, the number of actual tunable parameters have decreased. If you don't believe me, check out several versions of O'Reileys Unix Tunning book. (The one with the swordfish). You can tune an engine but you can't tune a fish :-) What HP has done in the later versions of HP-UX, along with AIX and Sun, is to limit the parameters an admin has had to tune. What they have done is to create formulas to tune underlying parameters which need to be changed from the parameters you the admin can change. (If you go in to the files, (I also thing SAM shows this too.) you will see comments about the parameter automatically being tuned based on another parameter's value. You *do* have the choice of overriding this, however it is not recommended.) The bottom line, you will have trials and tribulations no matter which operating system you chose, or are forced to work with. If you can't or are unwilling to live in a heterogenous UNIX environment, then you shouldn't be a system administrator. While this seems like a rough statement, each vendor has a set of tools which makes it a viable system for some tasks. Gosh Darn it, can't we *all* live together in peace and harmony!
