Veritas Net Backup : on-bar IDS 10.0 AIX 5.3

Dear Gurus,
Our client is upgrading to Veritas Net backup including the system that uses
IDS 10.0FC4 on AIX 5.3. Thus the current backup using ontape need to be
changed to onbar command.
During initial testing, we managed to do the backup but was not allowed to
test restoration.
Then we created another database (dummy) instance as recomended by Informix.
However, we are not able to connet to the new (dummy) instance for backup. We
had checked all advice given but still the same.
Any suggestion is very much appreciated.
Regards.

Hi,
what exactly do you mean when you say "we are not able to connect to the
new
(dummy) instance for backup."?
I guess you are able to connect to the new instance using a utility like
dbaccess.
Is it that when you want to execute onbar commands that they can't
connect?
How do you execute the onbar command?
What are the error messages in the ON-Bar activity log file? (See
BAR_ACT_LOGconfiguration parameter in your onconfig file for the file name of this
log.)
You can set BAR_DEBUG (and BAR_DEBUG_LOG) parameter in the onconfig
to get debug tracing from onbar command execution. Values for BAR_DEBUG
are between 0 (zero, no debug tracing) to 9 (lots of debug tracing).
You may or may not be able to "decipher" the meaning of the debug tracing
...
you have to try and see ... :)
Try to run the onbar command from the command line prompt in the same
environment where you are able to run dbaccess successfully.
If dbaccess can connect to the new instance, then onbar should be able as
well.
Then check that onbar really does backup (to storage manager).
Only after that try to run onbar commands for backup from within the
Veritas Net Backup environment (which I guess is what you want to do??).
BTW: If I remember correctly, the destination pool for backup objects is
controlled by
an environment variable when using Veritas Net Backup. If you backup
dbspaces
and logical log files (recommended), then the recommendation is to put
these
different objects into different pools (on the storage manager side).
Therefore
with Veritas Net Backup you may have to spend some thoughts on how to
accomplish this properly.
Regards,
Martin
