Memo fields in Access

Recently we had to write a central database that mimicked all of the sales databases on a sales force's laptops. The central database was Informix and of course, the local stuff was Access. Everything worked fine except for the Access Memo field. Given a few choices (var char, blob, chopping it into chars), can anybody make suggesstions on how best to share information across these two databases and these data types.
