I've never heard of a -c option. A -u or -k option is supposed to
perform a checkpoint anyway.
The change that was made in version 6 was that the -k option no longer
rolled back unfinished transactions as it did in version 5. So the
transactions would only be rolled back at startup time, thus causing a
potential delay. If you want to shutdown completely and perform the
rollback, then you must issue the -kuy options. I'm sure I have
mentioned this before, and possibly is has made it to the FAQ.
This then is the basis of the problem you would encounter when upgrading
to a new version. You should rollback all transactions in the old
version instead of attempting to roll them back in the new version.
I would never recommend running onmode -ky unless you were in a hurry to
shutdown and you had a lot of active users. You will STILL have to wait
for the startup, but it might let you go home earlier. ;-)
