Problem with UPDATE STATISTICS
Answered: amber (hollow confidence) — Art Kagel's initial diagnosis (client/server protocol version mismatch causing a -407 comms error) is plausible given the very old IDS 7.31 platform, and he corrects the asker's mistaken belief about WITH NO LOG blocking an upgrade, but the exchange drifts into a broader migration/licensing discussion without ever confirming the -407 error itself was fixed.

Gustavo hit error -407 when running UPDATE STATISTICS HIGH on an 86-million-row table (and earlier during dbimport) on IDS 7.31.TD6 under Windows. Art explained -407 means the client/server connection broke (a buffer of zeros) and asked about the tool and CSDK version; Madison suggested a network timeout, which Gustavo ruled out. Art suspected an old bug fixed long ago and urged an upgrade; discussion drifted into upgrade obstacles (Clarion app, ODBC, static linking, licensing) and 11.50 end-of-support rumours. No fix for the -407 is recorded.

Dear Friends:
I have a problem with high update statistics as to reach a particular table,
throws me the error code -407.
I'm working with a base of "fresh" data, since I have loaded from a dbimport
on another server, which is not accused any problem more than appoint them
during the import process.
The table is a large table, which contains 86 million records.
I hope that some may realize the error.
I thank you for your attention.
Gustavo:
The -407 error indicates that the client and server are no longer
communicating successfully. It specifically indicates one side or the other
received a communications buffer containing only zeros.
What tool are you using to execute the update statistics high command? Are
the CSDK/iConnect libraries on the client executing the command up-to-date
with the engine version?

Hi Art!
Thank you very much for answering!
The first mistake was with the executable dbimport (dbimport.exe).
Then I connected via the SQL Editor, and the problem reappeared.
The server is a Windows 2008 R2 and the motor is an IDS 7.31 TD6
A hug!
Gustavo
Either that or the network folks are timing out a network connection is there
is no activity over a period of time....

That is a VERY old platform and Informix version. It's not beyond the realm
of possibility that you are hitting an old bug that's been fixed for 15
years.
You REALLY should upgrade to the latest Informix v12.10xC6 release.

Hi Madison! In no time the network has stopped working, in fact, when this happens, the SQL Editor error message me, and he did not. Also the error occurred during the import process, that is why I consider that the error does not come from that side. I appreciate your very kind attention! Gustavo
I totally agree with you Art, and if I had my way, I would have done it long ago. The problem is that our system provider has spent his entire Oracle development, and does not provide more support for Informix. The connection between the application and the database is done through ODBC !!!. To change engine version, they also have to modify code in version for Informix, because in many ways create temporary tables without the WITH NO LOG clause, which later engines (except 9.4) do not accept. That is, we are bound to this version. What surprises me is that it is the first time it happens.
Gustavo:
All versions of Informix accept/support the WITH NO LOG option to the
CREATE TEMP TABLE DDL statement, from Online v4.01 all the way through IDSv12.10. In v11.50 and later it is truly optional because there is an
ONCONFIG parameter, TEMPTAB_NOLOG, that makes WITH NO LOG the default for
all temp tables, but it is accepted and processed as expected even if
TEMPTAB_NOLOG is set to 1.
ODBC is also still a valid interface with Informix. If your application
cannot be recompiled, then it will continue to work with the existing
libraries. If it can be recompiled then it will be able to better take
advantage of new features (like Informix Connection Manager connection
redirection), but it will work either way. I have a client that upgraded
the server behind a whole manufacturing system compiled using ESQL/COBOL v
7.25 and it is now happily connected to v11.70 (haven't upgraded to v12
yet).
If you need it, I can help with the upgrade POC and testing as well as
implementation.

Dear Art, do not know how much I appreciate your offer of help. I commented how the scenario: We Informix IDS 7.31 TD6 running on a Windows 2000 Advanced Server. The application is made Clarion version 5 (16 bits). It is connected to the engine by Informix client 7.30. I tried to connect to the server application using the client 2.90 and 3.1 of Informix, and threw an error in the connection string. The instance is called "ol_primario" and the database is called "cemdo" and when the application is trying to connect, it said no base was called "cemdo @ cemdo". I have to install Informix 11.50 (can not remember, but I think we have the latest version licensed), but this limitation is impossible to me. I hope that with your experience you've been able to solve such problems. A hug! Gustavo
Do you have the ability to recompile the application and relink using the
newer CSDK releases? It sounds like the application is statically linked
which can present a problem as the internal protocols have changed over
time but the function calling protocols haven't changed significantly since
v7.24 except for the addition of object oriented support.
You can check if the app is dynamic or static by running "ldd
<executable>". If that lists libraries under $INFORMIXDIR then it is
dynamic and should be working. If it does not and lists no libraries or
only system libraries, then it was linked static and that may be the
problem. Here's an example of a dynamic linked app I have here, note the
Informix libraries I've highlighted in red. Yours will be different since
its using the ODBC libraries not the native Informix SQLI protocol libs
(should show links to libraries in $INFORMIXDIR/lib/cli):

Oh, FYI, if you are licensed for v11.50 and you have maintained annual support, you can upgrade to v11.70 or 12.10 at no additional cost. Note that v11.50 will probably be going out-of-support in September 2016. Art Art S. Hi Art. I read your post and honestly I was a little confused and a little concerned. How is it possible for IBM to announce the end of support for a product in September or even at the end of 2016 on such short notice? In IBM's site there is no mention of the end of support for 11.50. Is this an unofficial information? Can you (or someone) enlighten me? Best regards Eduardo
Hi, I have enquired IBM for 11.50 but they told me that probably one or two years but not sure confirmed date. Thanks medkba. I'll also try to get an official answer from IBM.
