XBSA Error: (BSAGetObject) during restore
Posted in 2017
User encountered XBSA Error (BSAGetObject) when attempting logical log restore with onbar. Solution involved running correct restore sequence (onbar -r -p followed by onbar -r -l -C), then discovering the root cause: logical log file permissions were set to read-write for root only. Changing permissions to read-write for the Informix user resolved the issue, revealed by checking ISM daemon logs.

Hi All,
I've been working at learning to do restores from our production environment
to our back up environment. The goal is to have the environment running in a
continuous logical log restore state until needed. Well I'm having an issue
getting started after issuing the onbar r command it results in the following
XBSA Error:
2017-11-01 14:09:03 15809 15807 Successfully connected to Storage Manager.
2017-11-01 14:09:06 15809 15807 XBSA Error: (BSAGetObject) A query or object
retrieval tried to get more data than exist.
2017-11-01 14:09:06 15809 15807 (-43294) ON-Bar was unable to get the backup
record of logical log 90508 from the storage manager.
Can you guys help me find the resolution?
Are you running the correct steps?
When starting the Continuous Log Restore, first do the physical restore,
followed by the logical restore in Continuous mode:
Physical Restore: onbar -r -p
Logical Restore: onbar -r -l -C
Keep repeating the logical restore command periodically to continue
restoring logs to the standby environment.

Hi John, I think you never mentioned which storage manager is being used - can you elaborate on this? Please also include Informix version and platform information. Andreas

Hi Mike,
After running the onbar -r -p, I ran onbar -r -l -C and I get the following
messages, where do I look now?
2017-11-02 09:28:16 23141 23139 Warning: The ixbar file is missing an entry
for one or more logical logs. Last log id: 37560 Current log id: 54611

Hi All, we have resolved the issue. I want to thank Andreas for sticking with
the post to it's conclusion and A huge thank you to Mike for actively guiding
me to the resolution over the course of more than a day.
Basic points were that:
I'm using ISM as the storage manager
The onbar logical restore couldnt get the logical log file backups and was
giving the error XBSA Error: (BSAGetObject)... bad or missing file number
The problem ended up being the file permissions on the logical logs were set
to rw for root only. After the permission were set rw for informix the onbar
-r -l -C ran successfully.
What made it difficult to get to the resolution is that the file names of the
actual logical logfiles do not match the file names that are given in the
BAR_ACT log or the ixbar file. Mike suggested that I check the the ISM log
files, $INFORMIXDIR/ism/logs/daemon.log, it was there that I found the
message'nsrd: media info: cannot open /backups/txlogs/87573.0 file: Bad file
number' and when I check for the file I found, '-rw------- 1 informix informix
20611072 Nov 1 18:31 87573.0'. I then noted the missing permissions, changed
the permissions and issued the onbar -r -l -C, and it worked.
