on-archive / on-bar

Hi Gurus, I am new to Informix DBA activities (unix environment). I want to know the differences between On-Archive and On-Bar. Which one should I use for back up of databases ? Thanks in advance. If you're not already using on-archive, DON'T!!!!! At least, that's the word I get from some SAP/Informix DBA classes. On-Bar relies on a storage manager software product (Legato, ADSM, or a basic system supplied with Informix) to actually write the backup data to a storage media, manage the storage media and read the storage media. On-Bar's responsibility is to get the data from the database server, send it to the storage manager and keep track of what backups (database and log) were done and when. With On-Bar, a restore will automatically call for the last backup tapes, then the last incremental backup tapes (if any), then any log tapes that must be processed. So, a 'normal' restore is VERY simple with it. Special restores, like point-in-time, are supposed to be almost as simple, but I've never tried one, so have no opinion. On-archive is supposed to manage its own storage media, but I've been told it is VERY difficult to set up properly and, if not set up properly, it could ruin your whole day. On-tape (the third option, that you didn't mention) does backups to a user specified device or file and then leaves the media management tracking to the user. It is excellent for 'dumb' backups/restores, as in moving databases from one server to another, but it puts ALL the load for managing backups (including tape swapping) and logs on the user. Personally, I prefer on-bar for most backup functions related to disaster recovery (I use ADSM for storage management) but prefer on-tape if I'm copying my database from one site to another. Hi,
thats easy:
onbar is a replacement for onarchive.
Since onbar is an interface only, you need a frontend
for onbar. You may use ISM Informix Storage Manager for that.
But don't use ISM of V7.2x.Tyz on WinNT. Higher versions (7.3x)
and Unix are ok.

Forget On-Archive. It was an interrim solution to a more advanced
archive package than ontape and it was developed by a third party and
is now falling by the roadside now that Informix has developed the
On-Bar system. You should either use ontape or On-Bar.
