RE: Corrupt Indexes

We had a similar problem on several of are SE machines also. We are running SE on NCR 3445(single 486 boxes) under SCO. We figured out that the problem was the hard drive. The SCSI drive was not certified on that platform. Even though the drive appeared to work fine, once we replaced the drive with a NCR certified drive, the problem went away. ===================================================================== Paul Watje Database Something or Another watjep@hasting.com Hastings Books, Music, & Video ---------- From: ilist To: informix-list Subject: Corrupt Indexes Date: Wednesday, March 29, 1995 7:08PM We have been having a major problem with our production system at several of our field sites. We will intermittently experience corrupted indexes. We will typically get an error like, "Could not update a row in the table" (346) or "Duplicate value for a record with unique key" (100). Sometimes we do a repair table and the problem is fixed. Other times the repair table does not find a problem and we still cannot insert or update the row. When this happens we usually end up unloading, dropping, recreating, and reloading the table. This is of course very inconvenient to us and the users, not to mention time consuming. The tables that the corruption typically happens to are anywhere from 50,000 rows to 500,000 rows and 5MB to 80MB. There are 2 other anomolies that continue to be present on these systems also. About every two weeks we will notice an index file that is ten times its regular size, i.e., 1 or 2GB. The other is that we update a counter field in a table to add 1 to it and all indications are that the update worked and it was committed, but the counter does not get increased by 1. Some hardware and software information: Digital DECstation 5000/25 O/S ULTRIX Ver. 4.3 Informix SE Ver. 5.00.UC3 1 GB hard drive 40MB memory Some suggestions we have tried that did not work are: 1. Upgrade from Informix SE 5.00.UC2 to 5.00.UC3 2. Remove an update statistics command that was running once an hour. This problem was logged with Informix technical support on Jan 11th, 1995 and is still an open problem report, # 324380. Any help anyone can offer will be greatly appreciated!!!
