Applying logical logs after level 0 restored
Posted in 2010
A user restored a level 0 archive on Informix 7.13 (HP-UX) but didn't apply the logical logs during the restore, and asked how to apply them afterwards -- also hoping to use daily log backups to keep a development box in sync with production. The answer: once the restore finishes and the server is online, logs can't be applied; the only option is to redo the restore and include the logs when prompted. Standalone/continuous log restore (warm standby style) wasn't available until IDS 11.10, so upgrading was recommended; one poster described achieving it on older versions only via complex custom scripts that keep the server permanently in restore mode (and thus unusable).

Hi Everyone, I just restored the complete level 0 backup of informix 7.13 on hp-ux 10.01 in our development environment. At the end of restore, I didn't forget apply logical logs to the database. can anyone advise me to apply the logical logs on the database that I restored? Please help. Best Regards Deepak

Your only choice is to start the restore again and do not forget the logs this time !!!
Your post is confused. If you did NOT apply the logical logs at the time of
the restore, then under IDS 7.13 your only recourse is to perform the
restore again remembering to restore the logical logs when ontape or onbar
asks for them. You cannot restore logical logs independent of an archive
restore prior to IDS 11.10 IB.

Thx Keith,
I had a question.
I restored development box from production level 0 backup on 05/01/2010.
We want a synchronization of our production environment to a development? Is
there any way that we can do this in version 7.13?
We thought to apply logical logs to development box everyday for
synchronization because we are taking logical logs backup everyday in our
production environment using
ontape -c.
Can't we apply these logical logs to a development environment for
synchronization?
Can't we apply logical logs separately without level 0 restore? Is this the
limitation of version 7.13 we are using here?
Please advise.
Thx,
In IDS 11.10 and later versions you can create a warm backup server by
restoring the server using an archive from the primary then start a
continuous logical log restore and restore each logical log file or set of
logical log files brought over from the primary as they complete and are
archived (works best with ontape -a from a cron or from the ALARMPROGRAM to
backup each log as it completes). There is a facility to stop the restore
and restart it later, but only if the engine is kept in recovery mode. Once
the engine is online it is assumed to no longer be compatible with the
logical logs you would restore.
At any rate, in way back in IDS 7.13 in 1995 this feature was not even a
gleam in its father's eye.
I know you've been told this before, and I know there are reasons why you
are still on 7.13, but, all that aside, you REALLY need to upgrade to a
current release. Say... 11.50xC6W3 or later.

the other posters are correct, you can't do it. perhaps you could, if you come up with a complex series of home-grown scripts to hold the development server in continous logical log restore. we did this at one of my previous jobs. we modified the alarmprogram to backup only after 5 logs were full, then we bundled the logs, zipped them up, ftp'd them to another site where an expect script was constantly running, watching for files to show up... then they showed up, the expect script fed the logs to the constantly running/waiting informix restore. it was complex but it worked. of course this means the development server would not be accessible at all since it is in constant restore. probably easier to upgrade to a supported version that has this type of feature built in as others have indicated.
