We need to : be able to build GUI (X/Openwindows/Motif) and forms (ascii terminal based in : the main) interfaces, access databases from our own software (written in C : and C++) and work over a network (between sites). We run Sun systems at 4.1.2 : and above. Any clues would be welcome before I start talking to suited : informix sales people :-) The 'technical briefs' I have through so far seem : full of a variety of options and lots of large numbers. Informix have products that will allow you to do all of the above. The cost will largely depend on the number of users... 1) Decide which DB Engine you need. You may need some advice on loading. If you are going to be a "heavy" database user you'll need an OnLine Engine with I-Star to give network access to the database. If you are going to be a "light" database user then Standard Engine with I-Net might suffice. 2) The Informix SQL package will allow you to create and maintain database tables and simple ascii based forms. 3) The Informix ESQL/C package will allow you to develop C/C++ apps that can connect to your database(s). 4) The Informix 4-GL package will allow you to generate form based apps. 5) The Informix 4-GL/GX package will run you 4GL apps as graphical apps under X/Motif and MS-Windows. I hope this helps. If you do not have the necessary expertise in-house I strongly recommend you pay for a little consultancy... -- Paul Mahoney, X-Act Solutions Limited smail: 20 Shipley Lane, Cooden, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, TN39 3SR email: ptm@xact.demon.co.uk ... pmahoney@cix.compulink.co.uk phone: +44 424 846368
