Strange QBE problem

I have a problem that I've never seen before. In a query by example, if the user enters a value that overflows the field down to the prompt line, the where clause is truncated. For example, I have a field that allows 4 characters in it. The user wants to search for 2 salesman so they enter BW|JW in the field. The field only shows BW|J as you would expect, and the prompt line at the bottom shows BW|JW as you also would expect. However, the where clause has this value "salesman in ('BW', 'J')".
