Re: Informix with 3rd party front-end

To Andrzej Luber: We, too, are migrating from SQLBase to Informix. Early this year I went through the same process that you are going through. We decided to go with Informix over Oracle for a number of reasons. The easy choice would have been to select Oracle. Why? Centura (formerly Gupta) was started by ex-Oracle folks. Therefore, SQLBase took on several of the characteristics of Oracle. Today, we are converting our SQLWindows v5.0.1 apps to go against an Informix backend. In our conversion, there have been no real "gotchas". In you decide to go with Informix, a few things to keep in mind during your conversion: (1) Nulls are handled differently in Informix (2) Dates should be converted to strings in your SQL statements (3) We used stored procedures to mimmic SQLBase @ functions. For instance, I created a stored procedure called char(..) to mimmic @char(...). By creating the SP's, this made the conversion go much smoother. But, there is a PRICE TO PAY. In version 7.1.3, SP's don't perform all that well. I heard that in On-Line 7.2, SP's are going to be performed in parrell. We have Centura Teamdeveloper in-house but I have not done any testing with it. It will support connectivity to an Informix On-Line engine. I hope this helps. Steve Romankiw Executive Risk Inc.
