Re: Best Linux distro for Cheetah (and also the older versions...)

I'm using Ubuntu as well, for my laptop, haven't installed IDS on it yet, but I'm curious that you're having problems. I do find that VMware solves a multitude of problems, still having to rely on Windows for certain things, so I'll effectively jail-rooted Windows as a VM on my laptop so it will behave in a box, and let Linux take over as host... but I digress... RedHat Fedora Core 6 isn't too bad, actually, and Fedora Core 7 came out just last week. I've been working with RH AS 4.x for the past few months in a corporate environment, and despite my distaste for RH, it seems to work well. As Niel pointed out, a lot of corporate linux decisions are driven by support requirements, so you have to roll with it, and pick what gets supported. I know Ubuntu has corporate support so I'm sure over time you'll see this as a viable choice. Ubuntu's update features are pretty slick, and I've actually got apt-get for RPM working on some of my FC6 machines to do updates. Funny thing about RHAS, ES, and all those that require a subscription, if you set up yam and/or apt-get you can get updates without having to pay for them. I just love how this works, and I'm sure RedHat corp must too. :-) It is important to note that with FC, and the other RedHat variants for the enterprise you get really good, solid LVM support. Same for SuSE SLES. I'm not sure about SuSE 10.2 desktop having LVM support but I think it's built-in. What I mean by that is that these RH distros have system-config-lvm and other system-config tools installed, and really work well in the enterprise with SANs, etc. Same for SuSE. A lot of EMC drivers for example are now included in the kernel without you having to load modules, etc etc. Hope this helps... FC6 is actually decent, FC7 also makes a big departure in being totally ( supposedly ) out of the hands of RedHat now, a completely open source project. As always your mileage may vary ( or kilometers :-) -t- Jean Georges Perrin wrote: > Hi, > > > > We are planning to squeeze our Cheetah on Windows for a set of virtual > systems on Linux.
