Re: DB's on CD's (again)

Chuck,
I dont know about this. But the following is the problems I will see.
If you try to put the whole instance there it will not work as
Informix needs to write things ie physical log/logical log.
Even if you wanted the CD to be a dbspace or a chunk so that you could
add it to the instance when you wanted to use it, this will not work.
When you add a chunk or dbspace Informix wants to write free lists and
chunk timestamps etc.
An option would be to put an onunload of the database on the CD. This
could then be onloaded when you wanted to access it. But this limits
you to not be able to change online versions or hardware platforms
etc.
dbexport is a truly portable platform and you could load the data back
when it was needed. One or two GB dbimports arent too bad, but are a
far cry from "online" access.
Let me know if you do get this to work. We are currently archiving
data to CDs and have to use ASCII format for the above reasons.
Jason
BTW, I know that MS SQL-Server allows you to create read-only
databases on removable media. But it is a special option.
