^@ in report file

I'am producing report files from Informix 4GL programs in association with Chameleon 2000. Some of the reports have a random occurrence of ^@'s in the file. These cause considerable problems when printed. Has anyone seen this sort of thing before....I have no idea where they come from.....any help would be appreciated.
